…I’m sure that you have heard that before…”Money doesn’t grow on trees!” I think a lot of parents use this cliche when they are are asked to do something that involves spending money. Fortunately for me my parents didn’t use this one on me. If they would have I probably would have gotten in trouble because the smart alec in me would be saying that money is made with paper…and paper comes from trees so technically Money does grow on trees!
I think that most parents use that cliche and a ton of others because they really don’t know how to teach kids about money. In fact a lot of parents struggle with the concept of money themselves and so it is unlikely that they would be able to teach their children what they do not know themselves.
As young people we spend most of our lives in school…the place where we are supposed to learn…and yet even at school they rarely teach us about money. We go to school learn about the basics…the three R’s…Reading, writing, and Arithmetic…(which really isn’t three R’s more like the RWA’s) In any case we learn the basics, graduate, maybe go on to college and are thrust into life where we now have to figure out how to handle money.
Fortunately for my siblings and myself my parents decided that they didn’t want us to grow up not knowing the value of money, and the importance of learning how to invest. I must admit that it wasn’t always fun in the beginning, having to earn everything, or even working for things…but that changed when I received my first check in the mail. It felt good to walk into the bank and make a deposit into my own bank account.
Our goal for this blog is to begin to share some of the things we have learned on our journey toward fiscal fitness, and in the process maybe even learn a few things from some other money minded folks out in the blogiverse.
Until Next time….
